#61,602 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

To be honest, I initially thought the idea of an engineering approach to happiness was a completely ridiculous one, and mostly read the book out of pure curiosity. To my shock, I couldn't put it down for 3 days! The book has profoundly changed my perspective on several aspects of life, essentially making me a much happier person. Definitely works.

If you've done any studying on the topics of the illusion of the self, being hung up on the past, being too focused on the future, and the benefits of living in the present, then you won't learn much of anything new in this book. If you're new to this type of study, this is a good place to get started. My challenge with this book is that its yet another rich person trying to tell the rest of us what is and isn't important in life. As a former bigwig at Google, this guy has more money than he knows what to do with. I don't begrudge him his money, I'm a free-market/capitalist kind of person, but every time he talks about what isn't important I can't help but have the same feeling I have when multi-gazillionaire Oprah tells people that money isn't necessary to be happy. In talking about how we often exaggerate the worst possible outcome of a situation, Gawdat talks about losing your job. He asks, "Whats truly the worst thing that could happen from losing your job? You might find yourself with more free time to play piano?" Um...no. For most people losing their job carries the very real threat of losing their home and their family experiencing significant suffering. The thoughts and ideas in this book are fine, but if you've read anything on meditation/Buddhism/being present in the moment, I would skip it and find something else.

A refreshing and practical way to think about how we approach our expectations for life and happiness. The author draws on deeply personal experiences, mathematics, physics, and more to help readers understand their own simple "formula" for happy- and to recognize the areas where we get the variables wrong at times. This book will resonate with analytical business or engineering minds, as well as creative or spiritual types. Highly recommend!

While this book gave me a lot to think about and consider, the one gem I have put into practice is telling my brain to "stop the drama". I can report that there has been less drama going on in my head and this has made me happier. I recently lost a son, as did the author, so much of what he discussed was relevant.

If you're reading this review, the book has already found you. This Mo guy is not your typical self-help author (not that I have anything against them, I'm one of those hippie-nerdy types who has an entire bookshelf dedicated to books on happiness :). He's probably the last person you'd expect to write a book like this (a Silicon Valley high tech executive) but I think that's part of what sets it apart -- it's a very carefully compiled set of insights with one goal only -- your happiness.I challenge you to read this book and *not* end up questioning some of your most deeply held beliefs -- in the most wonderful, enlightening, and life-freeing way. Just flip to any chapter and prepare to have your mind delightfully blown-- there's so many surprising topics you wouldn't expect to find within one cover. I can't wait until this book gets into the hands, minds and hearts of millions because it will truly spark a revolution within our collective consciousness, irreversibly raising our capacity to enjoy life as it's meant to be lived. I'm so grateful for Mo's dedication to sharing his many years of personal research and the equation that has passed the ultimate test of any human being's resilience... truly a gift that I have already begun to share with everyone I can.

Great Book / NO this is an AMAZING book so far. Though I have not yet finished it. Mo Gives intelligent and practical ideas to guide us in our constant search for elusive Happiness. This is a great intellectual - turned author that has moved through a personal tragedy and can still find personal happiness in his life. One thing I like most is that in reading the book he shares his own personal stories that I can really relate to and visualize in my minds eye.

A motivational book with oversimplified suggestions, without the detail to make the information relevant for practical application in real life.

Excellent! Not your usual self-help "how to meditate" book. Effective strategy for helping linear thinkers examine their existence vs. their subjective experience of it which is always distorted and which promotes suffering. Incorporates many concepts of Eastern philosophy tracing back to Buddhism and earlier (without identifying them as such.) Powerful training techniques for escaping guilt and shame of the past and anxiety for the future. I agree with a previous reviewer that his attempt to mathematically prove the existence of God at the end of the book is out of place and would be better as part of a second book. This is a distraction but does not detract from the importance of the teachings he is transmitting.
