To fully appreciate how great this little book is, you must first appreciate what it isn't and was never meant to be: it is not a 400-page manual on how to stitch together a vintage baseball glove. If you are in search of that kind of information you would be better served finding a sage collector willing to share his knowledge. But to the serious fan, player or former player who wants to get a great perspective on how the glove evolved from leather work gloves to the complex tool we use today, this quick read is priceless.The historical chapters were just enough to entertain without being boring. And the anecdotes from former players added so much depth to the stories. But what I found most interesting were the stories from past and former players who told how they chose a glove, broke it in, and maintained it for game after game. I've played baseball from Little League through college and I've maintained my own gloves the whole time, but I still learned a few tips and tricks from the chapters on glove maintenance.Great little book that will be on my book shelf for many years. And I thought the price was quite a bargain for such a quality, hard-bound edition.In summary: Lots of information in a well designed, well constructed easy-to-read book.

This book manages to do two rather different things and it does them both well, namely first relate the history of the baseball glove and secondly describe how to choose and maintain a glove for players of various ages and levels of interest in the game. I was interested more in the part about choosing a glove, breaking it in and maintaining it, and this book did a fine job of explaining all that. But the historical side was interesting too, although I'm a sucker for anything well written on the subject of baseball. A serious baseball fan will find the whole book interesting, and someone trying to decide on a glove for their own use or as a gift will find this an invaluable resource.

Baseball players and fans truly love their gloves, and probably there is no more personal a relationship with sporting goods than our attachment to our gloves. Surprisingly, it seems there is very little written about the history and designs of gloves and mitts. This little book delves into the mysteries of glove break-in and maintenance. (Who knew that lanolin was so good a glove conditioner?) It is well written and can serve as sort of a "glove owner's manual". It is a great, quick read and a long-overdue tribute to the humble baseball glove.

This is a fun book for anybody who loves baseball, and especially for those who love the feel of a baseball glove fitting just right on their hand and hearing the 'pop' of a ball as it smacks into the pocket. Liberman gives a well researched and well illustrated history of the development of baseball gloves, along with many stories and testimonials from both professionals and regular folks. He provides chapters on breaking in, maintaining, and restoring (with careful attention to a good sequence for complete re-lacing) baseball gloves. This book is a great catch, and you will be glad to have it in your hands.

This book was really interesting. It provides information on the history of the baseball glove, lots of pictures, anecdotal references from baseball legends and their gloves, and information on how to properly care for a glove.I could not have asked for better content.

What I expected! Just as described

I must say upfront that I am not a glove collecter, so my perspective may be different from the other gentleman. However I am a true baseball fan. A big part of the enjoyment of baseball when you are young is getting your first baseball glove. For me, it started with an old hand-me -down fom my father - so seeing a lot of the old gloves and pictures of the great baseball stars was enjoyable. The bottom line is that this book lived up to the reason I bought it ... it was FUN to read for me. I am going to give it to my son to read and I think it would be an excellant book for all little league players as well. It is obvious that the author has a real passion for the baseball glove and wrote a book that reflected that. I especially enjoyed the stories, the ideosynchrasies of different professional players and the illustrations. I learned a lot of things about the baseball glove that I did not know. I highly recommend it.
