About the Author

John Keats (1795–1821) published several volumes of poetry during his short life, including Endymion, The Eve of St. Agnes, La Belle Dame sans Merci, and The Fall of Hyperion, which established his reputation.John Barnard is emeritus professor of English at the University of Leeds and is the editor for the Penguin Classics edition of John Keats's Complete Poems.

The folks at Penguin really do an excellent job of compiling material and putting it together in a concise enjoyable manner. The letters, of course, are a fantastic read all on their own, but the additional notes help guide the reader and give explanations of some of the places and people Keats writes about. There's a chronology of Keats's life and short bios on Keats's correspondents in the back of the book, which is extremely helpful. And, as in most Penguin publications, the book has a thorough and informative introduction to the subject matter. This is a book you can pick up, turn to any page and enjoy, but each letter has something beautiful and/or engaging in it and I recommend reading it from start to finish. It also makes an excellent companion to read alongside any biography of Keats.

As far as I know, no other edition is comparable. I feel I know not only John Keats, but also his circle. The story is better than the majority of good novels, of immense interest even if he were not the poet he was.

Keats was probably the greatest letter writer -- certainly the greatest thinker about poetry and writing as reflected in his letters -- in English (only Byron and James really come close). The obvious remark, that Keats felt and wrote right at the nerve endings, is everywhere proved in these letters. But it is the transformation of these experiences into working ideas that is the ultimate value that comes from reading and rereading them. The older selection by Gittings in Oxford World Classics has been a constant companion for many years, so this is an interesting variation (virtually the same selection, no big surprises), with perhaps more user-friendly notes. It remains astonishing that these letters were all written before he made it to twenty-six years of age.
