My five-year old grand daughter and I read this on a camping trip. She loved the whole idea of a pony in the garage for a summer. It's an engaging story for little ones.Negatives are that the story has holes in it-almost as if an editor was trying to make it fit into a certain number of pages so they left out parts. I had to fill in the blanks in places.I would recommend with reservations.
I bought this book for a Great-niece, who is an avid reader. I never read this as a child as I was too old for it by the time it came out, but I ran through it quickly last night before gifting it.I think I would have liked a bit more of the reality factor as I was reading it, but did note that it had a lot more realism when it concerns horses/ponies than what I read at a comparable age. It shows that the author is a pony breeder/owner herself, and did a pretty good job of balancing the horrors of horse ownership with keeping it fun for the Equine-smitten kids. When I had my first horse and pony, I knew next to nothing about their care, other than what I'd been able to glean out of horse books at the time; which wasn't much. There was so much less available at the time.I did like that the hazards of tying horses out on long ropes was mentioned, as well as the colic episode, although the family got off pretty easy in both cases. Kids should probably be glad that Doty wrote this rather than myself, because I probably would have scared them blue with all my memories of things that happened to horses and novices. All in all, I thought it had a nice balance of reality vs. longings. Such as winning a third place ribbon, instead of a blue, for example.Another review mentioned that this was not the original text, and perhaps had I known that earlier, I would have gone with the other edition, but if your child is young and horse smitten, they are probably not going to notice the difference a whole lot.
The author manages to stick to mainly sight words while adding a plot and working new vocabulary in a way that can fairly easily be figured out from the context. My first grader reAd it to my second grader and they they both enjoyed it...me too!
This book was perfect for my ten year old granddaughter. She has not developed the love of reading that I had as a child (thanks to the Internet)..so I am trying to encourage her with our special together reading time...This book kept her attention and she never complained when it was time to read. I would recommend this book for any girl in her age range.
This book is easy to read and understand. It gives good insight into how much work having your own pony really is!
This book is older, written before cell phones and such. Still, it is one of my favorites from when I was younger. I was excited to see it available for Kindle, now. It is still a very good read. It is 100% appropriate for any age group. And don't worry, it has a happy ending. The illustrations are fantastic, I love how you can zoom and look at them in detail on the Kindle. The author does an amazing job with this horse story, and I highly recommend it.
My 8 year old granddaughter loved it!
Okay I admit that this was a favorite reads as a horse crazy kid and I downloaded the eBook because it was so inexpensive and I wanted to enjoy it again as an adult. The writing is easy and flows well. The author understands the bond between horses and people very well and she knows how to convey that to the read. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who loves horses.
