Really liked this book, but if you can only have one, Deconstructed has more info & pictures. This book cost less & is not as heavy.

I had a hard time to find a book about Andrew Geller houses, I found it on Amazon. I am french and I received it very rapidly. I simply love the houses shown in this book and would like to have one similar one day in my life. Great architect.

I have known Mr. Geller and parts of his family for over 15 years. This book can only begin to explain the genius involved in the designs I have seen. I have stayed in a home of Mr. Geller's design which was absolutely remarkable in its use of open space while still allowing for privacy in a home that at the time was shared by 7 people.I am thrilled that this book finally gives some long overdue credit to one of the pioneers of modern residential architecture.

I love this book. It's beautifully illustrated and well written. Certainly a must for anyone interested in modernist architecture second home design!

I had just finished with "The Innocent Man," googled around and discovered Ann Rule. As a victim of a violent crime not prosecuted by the DA due to political affiliations, I became interested in victim's rights, prosecutorial discretion and selective enforcement. Recently a friend in a similar line of work, photojournalism, was the victim of a similar violent assault. The crime was so heinous that this time the DA can not ignore it.I went to a courtroom to support my friend and had a deep fascination with the process, and the larger concept of "what is justice in our society?" Ann Rule is no Victor Hugo and this is no "Les Miserablés." But in a way: it's better. Rule provides current cases with in depth background research. You can understand what goes on behind the scenes, the difficult job faced by all involved: the victims families, the DAs, the detectives, and alike.She does this in a way which holds your interest as much as any fictional crime novel: but this stuff is true! Along the way she educates on the process and it's failures and successes. Her inside baseball approach gives you a behind the scenes look from a pro. I'd be remiss not mention that in the main story she does a good job of bringing you around again to have a shadow of a doubt. Is it a *reasonable* doubt? You're the jury, you decide. Makes you think. And that's what I wanted to get.Ann Rule goes into my bin of favorite authors. I finished this in a few days and indeed, found it difficult to put down. Thank you Ann.

Interesting, very well-researched and mostly well-written (except for a few glaring errors such as "tow" instead of "toe"), but very much out of date. (Disclosure: I purchased a used copy that was printed in 1993. There may be newer, updated versions available, so do look for one if you'd like to read this book.)

Also, there are no photos of some of the murder victims. Perhaps Rule wasn't able get to them, or permission to use them; but it is a huge and frustrating omission. I agree with Ann Rule that it is the victims who are the most important in any case and that they deserve to be remembered. So why include boring photos of some guys sitting at desks (detectives who worked on the cases) but no photo of the victim? I'm not morbidly lusting after gory crime scene photos of dead bodies, I just would like to see a nice photo of how each victim looked in life. The detectives certainly earned the right to be credited for their dedication, hard work, skill, and intuition; but their physical appearances have nothing to do with the stories and such photos add nothing to the book.

It was especially fascinating to read about important information that the juries were not allowed to hear. They had to have realized that they weren't getting the full story. It must have been terribly frustrating to them as well as for the detectives who worked so hard to gather that information and put the cases together. It makes you question some aspects of the American justice system. Don't even get me started on the shockingly violent killer who was released from prison after serving just a few years of his term - and then went on to commit further identically-gruesome murders on new victims. Or the one who was sent out on an unsupervised work-release program just a few miles away from the home where his surviving victim was attacked and still resided, and whose testimony was instrumental in his conviction; with . . . I was going to say "predictable results," but in this case the result was unpredictably - even unthinkably - catastrophic. I'm glad Ms. Rule is writing books like this one. The American public needs to know about the cracks in our criminal justice system that allowed these things to happen.

Reading this book certainly made me much more thoughtful about taking precautions to protect my personal safety!

This Ann Rule entry is a collection of crime stories. Rule has a talent for laying out case studies in a clear and well-researched writing style. However, this book starts off slowly with little to build the narrative. The first case goes on and on into minutiae, and was difficult to complete. The five other case studies which follow are much shorter in length and seem to fit this format better. Because the book has such a monotonous and over-weighted start, it feels disjointed and somehow incomplete.

All Ann Rule's true crime books are great. She writes in a detailed manner that shows the work that went into the story. There is no fluffy stuff just to fill the pages. I have read all her books and many other different authors true crime work. I find her writing to stand above the rest. Unfortunately she passed away less than 2 years ago and I will miss her contribution to this genre.

I like it when Ann puts a long story and then short stories into one book. I've been reading her for about three years now. I have not come across anything I didn't like. This one is just as good as any of the others I have read from her.Perhaps depending on the subject might Rule spend more time writing. The more notorious, the more pages, or a more popular title. I never heard of Randy Roth before, nor any of the others from the cases in this book, but I liked it just as much as Stranger Beside Me and Small Sacrifices.Nothing disappointing here. I say just go for any/all of her books if you like true crime. Thanks.

As always, Ann Rule gives you a look into the twisted people who walk the streets, leaving gruesome trails of brutality and taking of unsuspecting lives with them. Thank you Ann for teaching us to watch for them.

The characters' personalities in this true story are so well developed that their motivation is easily understood. A couple of them actually remind me of people I know. I'm not finished with it yet, but I can't wait to read another from this author.

This is one of the best mountaineering expedition books I have read. Ridgeway takes the reader through the intense daily struggles (both mental & physical) required to climb K2, perhaps the hardest of the 8000 meter peaks to climb. In 1978 a large team of Americans, including some of the best US high altitude climbers at that time, have the all consuming goal to be the first from the USA to reach the summit of K2 (which had been climbed only twice before). Their incredible ordeal begins with an arduous approach hike, and continues with increasingly difficult challenges against the weather, altitude, and other deadly hazards. Unfortunately, the team members frequently argued, and struggled to work together effectively. Ridgeway is very candid about this, and does not spare himself criticism. Against all odds, 4 climbers made superhuman efforts to achieve the summit (mostly without supplemental oxygen) by a new route, and somehow survived the descent. Ridgeway's masterful writing made me feel like I was there, and I gained tremendous appreciation for the commitment and skills of the climbers. My only complaint was the lack of diagrams showing the route and camps, but the photos are striking.

Great Book, all of the personal intrigue makes it an engaging read. Had just read Living on the Edge: The Winter Ascent of Kanchenjunga byCherie Bremer-Kamp who was on the trip, and she recommended it. And also having read Roskelly's book about Nanda Devi I felt like I knew many of the characters. And they don't get along. A beautiful route to K2's peak that I had never learned about before. The cover says it all, some of the climbers had to traverse that knife edge ridge 11 times! A big adventure, and I don't think anyone dies, spoiler alert

"The Last Step: The American Ascent of K2" is Rick Ridgeway's extremely well written account of the first successful American ascent (and only third overall ascent at the time) of the world's second highest peak. "The Last Step" is the "expedition account" and includes fascinating commentary from several climbers, making for a more rounded view than most climbing books. "The Last Step" is blessed with a stunning collection of photographs which provide a sense of scale both of the beauty of the Karakoram Mountains and of the incredibly difficult terrain the expedition overcame.Ridgeway's account candidly describes the tensions and acrimony that built up in the expedition as it was repeatedly stalled by poor weather in the fall of 1978. The expedition spent 67 days on the mountain, much of it exposed to the debilitating effects of high altitude. The normally driven and competitive natures of good climbers became points of friction as the expedition faced oncoming winter and the likelihood that few if any of the climbers were going to get a shot at the summit.Ridgeway's narrative of the two successful summit attempts is absolutely hair-raising, as men too long in the "dead zone" above 26,000 feet climbed like near-zombies over dangerously exposed snow slopes. One climber, Jim Wickwire, was forced to bivouac overnight in sub-zero temperatures at 28,000 feet after zoning out and lingering too long at the summit.The account makes clear that only the most fit, capable, and single-minded climbers had any chance of topping out on K2 under the conditions faced in 1978. Those climbers with lesser skills or with distractions such as homesickness or as in one case, an affair with another member of the team, were unable or unwilling to risk all for the summit.This book is most highly recommended to fans of the climbing account genre. Although a long read at over 300 pages, others may find it of interest as an indepth look at what happens on world-class climbing expeditions.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most riveting mountaineering books around. Not for the climbing, which is in and of itself gripping, but for the slice of human drama found in the deterioration of relationships amongst various members of the expedition. At times, one is mesmerized by the bad behavior displayed at such high altitudes! One would think that these expeditioners were on Melrose Place, rather than fighting for their place in mountaineering history on K2, one of the most perilous mountains in the world to ascend.Central to all the squabbling, was the love trangle which developed on the expedition, which was perceived by some of the expeditioners to be an extra marital affair in progress. Though this later proved to be true, at the time it was the source of much denial and hard feelings. It further split the team, which was already divided over who would be chosen to summit, and eroded already existing friendships, while preventing new ones which might have otherwise developed.On top of all this, add in poor weather which caused them to spend about sixty seven days on the mountain, mostly at altitudes over eighteen thousand feet, and you have a recipe for disaster. These expeditioners, however, managed to become the first Americans to ascend K2.Their success in achieving their objective, despite the trials and tribulations which they endured, is testament to their fortitude in putting aside petty, mean spirited concerns and inter-personal conflicts. This painstaking account of the first time summit of K2 by Americans is a must read for all climbing enthusiasts and readers of this genre.

In 1962, my Dad took me to a Doubleheader at the Polo Grounds where the New York Mets were playing the defending National League Champion Cincinnati Reds. The Mets won the first game, and before the 2nd one, I walked down to the edge of the Mets Dugout, peeked in, and saw Casey Stengel looking out at the field, seemingly lost in thought. He was the oldest man that I had ever seen in a Baseball uniform, and his face was craggy and exuded many miles of character. It made a profound impression on me. The Mets proceeded to win the 2nd game in 14 Innings on a Frank Thomas Home Run, and I became a devout Mets fan for life on that day. It started with Casey Stengel, and Marty Appel's wonderful book brings Casey to life in all it's dimensions. I learned so much about his early years in the book, and also about his times of success and failure. In many ways Casey was perceived as larger than life, but he had foibles and deficiencies as well, and Mr. Appel's account is well-rounded. This is a terrific and engaging book.

Casey Stengel has been a hero of mine for many years. He persisted in the face of numerous challenges (read: genuinely awful ball clubs), and he did so with humor and elan. He loved baseball and gave it everything he had. This new biography gives Stengel fans a chance to relive most of the choice anecdotes from his long, varied, storied career, but it offers little that is new. The author justifies this new effort because an unpublished memoir written by Edna Stengel that was not available to other biographers was available to him. Edna's notes reveal three truths: 1.) Edna reveled in the glory of being Mrs. Casey Stengel; 2.) she and Casey actually spent very little time together throughout the course of their marriage, and 3.) her declining years were even more heart-rending than was previously known to the public. But with the exception of that third item, the other knowledge could be easily inferred from Robert Creamer's excellent--and in this reviewer's opinion, superior--biography, entitled Stengel: His Life and Times. That said, it's always a fun ride to revisit Casey, and I will credit Appel's version with one hilarious tidbit that I honestly did not know: Stengel's first professional baseball club was nicknamed the Lunatics. Give Appel a read and you'll see why that's fitting.

This book is the complete story of Casey Stengel from his upbringing in Kansas City to his dominance of world of baseball in New York. It is interesting to see how many great baseball players Stengel played with and managed over the years. Once his glory days were over with the Yankees he helped rebuild interest in National League baseball in NewYork after two baseball teams left the city for the west coast. The original Mets were love able because of the personality of Casey Stengel. This book is a fascinating history of how one man dominated the sport of baseball over the years. Casey Stengel was an ambassador for baseball and sports in general prior to ESPN and the MLB network. This book makes it clear that there will never be another Casey Stengel in any sport. This book is a must read for any sports fan and required reading for any Met or Yankee fan.

I grew up in the NY area towards the end of Stengel's Yankee career and was an active baseball fan when he took over the helm for the Mets. I was never a huge Stengel fan as he seemed more of a "clown" than a baseball genius so I was interested to read this book and to learn more about the man who is legend. At the close of the book, I set it aside with one thought: "Wow!" While it helps to be a baseball fan to get the most out of Appel's work, this book successfully works on many levels. For me it was less about baseball and more about a man and wife that lived a life they loved, faced adversity but persevered, and ultimately must have closed their lives without regret because they were able to live their lives focused on what they loved. Stengel was very good at what he did for a living, loved the career that he chose, and shared it with a woman he adored.A wonderful, well written work by Marty Appel.

For those of youse growing up as Yankees &/or Mets fans in the 1950's-60's, you recall Casey as the craggy faced skipper who spoke Stengelese. This book gives a much fuller and nuanced look at the Old Perfesser. It starts with his playing days and describes his talent and personality as a major leaguer. Mr. Appel then spends considerable time talking about Casey's ups and downs as a minor league manager. Included are how he dealt with players, coaches, owners and GMs, showing sides of him that are unknown to the general baseball fan.He goes on to recount Casey's managerial time in the majors, describing the above-mentioned relationships, showing his character strengths and flaws; his showmanship, and his catering to various sportswriters. Yet we're always brought back to the great baseball mind Casey had. He also talks about Casey's post managerial life and the long married life he had with his sometimes suffering wife, Edna.Many of Casey's mentioned quotes are priceless. You could look it up.Though the book is 400+ pages, its a fast read, not because it is facile but because of Mr. Appel's breezy and enjoyable writing style.I take leave of this review with 3 words that will live in history, Let's Go Mets.
